For the best part of 60 years I’ve been trying to tame the beast that is jazz clarinet – aiming to escape from the all-enveloping shadows of Benny Goodman and Buddy de Franco while simultaneously avoiding the carnivorous species of the saxophone family. My ‘style’, if that isn’t too grand a word, tends towards the folky and rustic (Bill Smith and Jimmy Giuffre are much to my taste), but I also have an interest in digital audio. This album, uploaded to DistroKid today, is a selection of reedy noises from the Crypt. It also includes a couple of examples of the wind controller in action. I’m under no illusions: this is pretty niche stuff. But if anyone stumbles upon these tracks and likes the experience, it would make me a happy clarinettist to hear about it.
